Chapter Eleven

“I never really thought he'd do something like that.” Nathan leaned against Jacob's shoulder as he picked at the label on his beer bottle.

“You know,” Aisha muttered, from her seat across from them, “I knew Paul was an asshole, but I never thought he'd do something like that, either.”

“Wonder how he found out?” Nathan reached down to scruff Maggie on the head. The poor dog hadn't left his side since he had found her.

Nathan's question had been running through Jacob's mind as well, ever since they’d found all of his stuff destroyed. How had Paul known? He, Jacob, hadn't known until he had taken Nathan back to his place and had the talk. Even then he didn't really know until Nathan had said so. So how had Paul known?

After finding the dog, the heart had gone out of the three of them. It was easier to cut Nathan's loses and pack up, rather than continue to shift through the wreckage. Even then it had taken a while to get all the surviving art supplies in the boxes. Jacob half wondered how the hell they were going to get all of Nathan's stuff into his tiny house. But then again, Nathan hadn't said he was going to move in with Jacob, had he? Aisha was the one who had taken control of that, telling Nathan he could stay with her.

A part of Jacob's heart had twisted when Nathan had accepted, but really, it was for the best. They didn't know how this was going to play out, and leaping into living together before they had even done more than kiss was a bit much, even if they both knew they were meant to be mates.

Even shifter love had its limits.

The Blue Heaven was well named, that evening. A few cold beers and some home-cooked food was exactly what the three of them needed. Thankfully it was quiet, as well. There was a table of retired locals in one corner and a couple of tourists in another, but other than that the three of them had the courtyard to themselves. There wasn't even a band tonight.

“I'm not even hungry,” Aisha said, looking away from the menu.

“I know just how you feel.” Jacob pushed his menu away and turned to see what she was watching. A few chickens were scratching in the dirt, looking for handouts. “Anyone you guys know?” he asked, nodding to the birds.

Nathan shook his head. “No, Brian isn't here right now.”

“Yeah, I haven't seen him for ages now,” Aisha said, her brow wrinkling up. She sat straighter and looked around, like it was the first time she realised exactly where she was. “When was the last time you saw him, Nathan?”

Nathan shrugged his shoulders. “Oh, just yesterday I saw him but then again, I don't usually eat here. It's a bit across town from...well...from Paul's place.”

Jacob reached his arm around to pull Nathan closer to him. “Well, between Aisha and me, it's a hell of a lot closer now, right?”

“Right!”

That deserved a kiss.
